We are delighted to announce that the Sakyong Jampal Trinley Dradul and Acharya Dale Asrael have granted a special permission to Shastri Iris Ramos of the Austin Shambhala Meditation Center to teach this program in Houston, TX.

Shambhala Meditation originated in the Fall 2011 while the Sakyong was in Pharping, Nepal receiving the Kama abhishekas—the transmission of the lineages of tantric teachings that were brought from India to Tibet. At the culmination of the event, the Sakyong had a strong experience of the need for humanity to connect to its own worthiness. He then reflected on how the Dorje Dradul had expressed to him that the essence of meditation is simply being. Thus, the text Shambhala Meditation arose both as a vision and an empowerment.

As described in his book, Shambhala Meditation: Proclaiming Basic Goodness, the Sakyong says: “Shambhala Meditation practice opens us to our own wisdom, tenderness and bravery, and is a powerful antidote to the aggression and suffering we see all around us. Shambhala Meditation is both intimate and profound; it teaches us to embody our inherent wisdom and compassion, and empowers us to discover the basic goodness of the world with an open heart’”.

The program, “Simple Strength: The Courageous Path of Shambhala Meditation in Difficult Times” will be presented to the Houston community during the weekend of April 13-15, 2018.

The events will begin on Friday evening, April 13, with an open salon pot luck, and then continue into a weekend format that includes the transmission for the profound ground practice of Shambhala Meditation, as well as practice, with talks and discussion regarding the cultivation of gentleness and inner strength or bravery, as the profound means to connect with ourselves and each other. As directed by the Sakyong, this program will follow the guidelines for a weekend course with a full day on Saturday, April 14, 2018 (9am-5pm) and a partial day on Sunday, April 15, 2018 (9am—12pm).

The text, Shambhala Meditation: Proclaiming Basic Goodness, is the required text for all participants during the weekend program. The book cost is additional for those needing the text. If a participant has already received the transmission, they are encouraged to bring their own copy. Copies will be available for sale.

Acharya Dale Asrael has expressed great appreciation, respect and admiration for the dedication, devotion and bravery that the Houston Shambhala community has expressed in the past years. She was especially touched by the great suffering that our community has endured during the hurricane devastation and loss in the past year.

We hope that you will join us for this program, and look forward to seeing you at this wonderful community celebration and practice opportunity.
